Specialist Leaders in Education (SLEs)

For up-to-date information on registered SLEs across the County please refer to the CASL website and guidance –

As a Teaching School Alliance, we will continue to appoint a number of SLEs when required, in line with CASL action plan.

  • SLEs are outstanding Middle and Senior Leaders, in positions below the Headteacher, with at least two years’ leadership experience (both in teaching and support roles). They have a particular area of expertise such as a subject, early years, behaviour or school business management and a successful track record of School Improvement.
  • SLEs support leaders in other schools.
  • The SLE role is about developing other Middle and Senior Leaders so that they have the skills to lead their own teams and improve practice in their own schools (predicated on a coaching model).
  • SLEs can come from any school or Academy, and whilst the individual must be outstanding, his or her school does not have to be.

Schools requesting SLE support should follow the protocol outlined in the CASL document.

For further advice and support please contact Lynne Brownrigg, Director of WLTSA
